Just Because You Are A Doctor Doesn't Mean You're Smart (Updated)

Case in point: NBC is reporting on an article published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) that claims that gun deaths are lowest in states with the most gun regulations. Ergo, the article concludes, more gun regulations will result in fewer deaths.

It has been long established that firearm homicides are much higher in large metropolitan areas which by coincidence, also seem to have the most restrictive gun laws. So what gun deaths are they talking about? Well, apparently, suicides. However, Australia's suicide rate didn't change after its gun bans, although suicides by firearms dropped. Apparently people intent on killing themselves find other ways to do so. (The impact on crime is more problematic: homicides may go down, but violent crimes will certainly go up). (See also here).

Update (3/9/2013): TTAG pokes more holes into the JAMA study.
